History
Heartwood Timber Building is owned and run by Nigel Shelbourne who has over 20 years experience in carpentry and building. After gaining a City and Guilds (Merit) in cabinetmaking from London Guildhall University in 1995 Nigel spent the next five years making fine furniture and architectural joinery in small workshops in south London.
Moving to the west country in 2000 he joined the team as head carpenter at Richards and Faulkner, a firm of interior designers specialising in the renovation of period properties in Bath.
In 2003 he became self employed trading as Shelbourne Carpentry, designing, fabricating and installing quality fitted furniture and joinery to homes in Bristol, Bath and London. Having developed an interest in the history of domestic and vernacular architecture, Nigel went back to formal education in 2010 and gained an MSc (Merit) in Timber Building Conservation at the University of Bournemouth in 2013.
With a commitment to continuing professional development he has successfully completed several practical skills based courses in oak timber framing and repair techniques for historic timber structures at The Weald and Downland Museum in Singleton, West Sussex. In 2014 Nigel launched Heartwood Timber Building bringing his accumulated specialist knowledge, skills, expertise and a team of skilled tradesmen to clients in the West of England.
